The Penguin finale was a huge moment for Oswald Cobblepot, but it appears the climax may not have been his last. That’s because The Batman Part 2 is scheduled to take place just a few weeks after the end of Colin Farrell’s spinoff series. That’s great news for fans, who have been waiting to see this iteration of the Caped Crusader team up with Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz) again.
However, it’s not clear how much The Penguin will impact the sequel. It is important to remember that The Penguin is not required viewing for The Batman Part 2. Reeves made sure to stress that both films are meant to stand on their own, but they will “deepen the world of Gotham.”
In terms of plot implications, it’s worth noting that The Penguin was set during Hurricane Maria, and the city suffered significant flooding as a result. The wealthier neighborhoods were given aid, but the poorer areas in Crown Point were left to suffer. This could play a role in how Mayor Bella Real (Amy Adams) decides to run the city, but that’s all speculation.
The Penguin’s big finale also set up a major conflict with his half-sister, Sofia Falcone (Christina Hendricks). Audiences saw Sofia locked up in Arkham Asylum, thanks to Oz, and she received a letter revealing that Selina is her true half-sister. Sofia and Selina will almost certainly have major roles in The Batman Part 2, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them team up, especially since both are now involved with the Court of Owls.
Reeves and his writing partner Mattson Tomlin did a deep dive into the comic books to figure out what kind of story they wanted to tell. One of the key things they learned is that Bruce Wayne needs to be able to work well with others in order to be successful, and the film took a very collaborative approach to the storytelling. The Batman Part 2 will be no different.
The Penguin is only the start of the new era for DC’s rebooted franchise. A second movie is already in the works, and Reeves has teased that it will explore the past of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The upcoming sequel will likely focus on his childhood, as well as the relationship with Rachel Dawes/Lady Death. That’s a big move away from the darker tone of the first film, but it’s not surprising considering how much the character has evolved over time. That being said, the second installment will likely still feature plenty of action and thrills for fans to enjoy. The Batman Part 2 is currently without a release date, but the first trailer will probably arrive in 2026. Stay tuned for more updates!
